Parliament debates legislation for judge-only trials

June 11, 2024

Barbados is moving to allow individuals accused of crimes to opt for trial by a single judge rather than before a jury.

That is one of the amendments to the Criminal Procedure legislation before the Lower House today.

Leading off the Debate, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Dale Marshall says Government has sought to correct inefficiencies in the criminal justice system.

He says judge-alone trials will make the court system more efficient.

Mr. Marshall also says new criminal justice rules are coming in the new court year.

According to him, pre-bargaining legislation is also on the cards.
