Place greater emphasis on mentorship

May 13, 2023

Chief of Staff of the Barbados Defence Force (BDF) Commodore Errington Shurland wants to see a greater emphasis placed on mentorship by today’s leaders.

He made the comment while delivering remarks at the graduation ceremony for the BDF’s Warrant Officers course, telling the 24 graduating officers that as leaders they must invest in their forces.

In addition to Barbados, the course attracted participation from officers from forces in the Bahamas, St. Kitts and Nevis, Guyana, Antigua and Barbuda, and Jamaica.

Commodore Shurland told them that their investment in their forces represents the development of the next generation of great leaders who will guide the future of our respective militaries.

The Chief of Staff adds that the process is extremely important as potential leaders seek out the best examples to model.

Also speaking during the graduation ceremony was Course Officer for the Warrant Officers course Major Andrew Darlington.

He said the course was designed to impart the skills and knowledge to the selected warrant officers and senior non-commissioned officers, to prepare them for promotion to the substantive rank of warrant officer, and to train them to function within more significant roles in their organisations.

He imparted some words of wisdom to the graduates.
