Police: No surge in vehicle theft

February 18, 2023

As police continue efforts to track down the car stolen during what was a brazen daylight carjacking Thursday, a senior officer is quelling any fears about a possible trend in this type of criminal activity.

Inspector Stephen Griffith, who’s responsible for crime prevention confirms lawmen are not seeing a surge in motor vehicle theft.

However, he’s asking Barbadians to remain vigilant and to stop taking unnecessary risks, like leaving the car unattended with the key in the ignition.

This, Inspector Griffith says, is just one of the ways some people drop their guard, taking for granted the general safety of most communities across the country.

Meanwhile the search continues for the two men seen in the viral video of the incident, who stole a red Suzuki Swift with registration number XB1277 from a valet business in Kingsland, Christ Church at around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday.

The armed assailants went on to the premises, confronted the business owner and pulled him out of the car.

The bandits were then able to make good their escape.

Both the valet owner and the owner of the vehicle have reported the incident to police.

Anyone with information about a red Suzuki Swift, license plate XB1277, is asked to contact the nearest police station.
