Political scientist: Prime Minister’s ‘prerogative’ to reshuffle Cabinet

October 23, 2022

Political scientist Peter Wickham says it is well within the purview of Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley to reshuffle the Cabinet as often as she deems fit.

“My sense is that the Prime Minister has the prerogative to reshuffle as frequently as she determines, and she’s determined that there is need for changes now, and so be it,” Wickham said while speaking to CBC News from France on Sunday.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Mottley announced major changes to the Cabinet, including the nomination of Member of Parliament for St. Thomas, Cynthia Forde as Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly to take place on Tuesday.

The head of the Caribbean Development Research Services (CADRES) acknowledges that many will question the reshuffle because Government is not even a year old.

But he believes the recent changes are designed to deal with matters of urgency.
