Barbados could soon have a media policy on the ethical reporting of suicides.
Mental Health Expert and Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr. Joy Sue, says the Ministry of Health and Wellness is collaborating with the Pan American Health Organisation, the Barbados Government Information Service and the various media houses on the island on the policy.
She made the revelation during a discussion hosted by PAHO that focused on the role of media in appropriate suicide reporting.
The meeting was titled “United to Make Suicide Prevention a Priority”.
Dr. Sue says a workshop was recently held with media professionals and top health officials in Barbados.
The Barbados Police Service will also be targeted.
Dr. Sue adds a 24-hour national mental health hotline is on the cards for Barbados.
