The Queen Elizabeth Hospital is running low on bed space for patients, but it’s not linked to the surge in COVID-19 cases.
Director of Medical Services, Dr. Clyde Cave, spoke about the situation on CBC TV8’s the Morning Report.
He reveals the number of patients presenting at the QEH has risen to at least two dozen on a daily basis.
This comes as the QEH braces for a possible surge in the number of people seeking medical attention, suspected of contracting COVID-19.
Dr. Cave reports the Hospital is already seeing evidence of this, as the number of reported cases in the country continues to rise.
He believes the current wave of COVID cases is being fueled by the Delta variant.
With the steady rise in cases, Dr. Cave tells the Morning Report there is the possibility more isolation facilities will be required, with Harrison Point almost at capacity.
His comments come as Barbados today expands its COVID-19 Vaccination Programme to children ages 12 to 18.
Dr. Cave says this is a critical juncture in the island’s response to the pandemic.
He explains children account for too large a segment of the population to be left unvaccinated.
