QEH officially restarts Joint Replacement Programme

November 18th, 2022

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital has officially restarted its Joint Replacement Programme.

It has come approximately 10 years after the programme was curtailed due to financial constraints.

According to a statement from the Hospital, this came into effect from yesterday.

It noted that three patients are scheduled to receive knee replacement surgeries within the first week of the programme’s recommencement.

In the statement, QEH Executive Chairman Juliette Bynoe-Sutherland in addressing the 10-year pause of this service, noted that the surgical team was expanded and the Rehabilitation Department readied to start immediate post-operative physiotherapy interventions as was required.

In commending the Hospital’s management team and Orthopaedic staff on the re-start of the programme, Minister in the Ministry of Health and Wellness with Responsibility for the QEH, Dr. Sonia Browne assured the public that additional resources have been put in place to address the backlog of cases.

She also indicated that phase two of the programme would involve the resumption of hip replacement surgery as well, which is scheduled to begin later this month.
