School to offer salon services once a month

November 19th, 2022

A local secondary school will be opening its salon to the public one Saturday in every month during the 2022–2023 academic year.

It’s the Grantley Adams Memorial School, and the salon is run by the students in the Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ) programme.

The community outreach, which targets people in St. Joseph, St. John and surrounding areas, began for the first time today at 10:00 a.m. and continues until 3:00 p.m.

CVQ Cosmetology students will be providing manicures, pedicures and natural hairstyles to patrons.

Acting CVQ Coordinator, Karen Elliott says the community outreach gives the students an opportunity to practise their craft and hone their skills while creating an entrepreneurial strategy.

She adds that this year is the first in which the students will be assessed in the Level 1 Cosmetology Standard, and expressed the hope that not only this cohort, but others would see the importance of the vocational subject areas.

Ms. Elliott is anticipating a favourable response to the initiative, and says as the need arises the school will look to have the salon open two Saturdays in each month, instead of once a month.
