More than 780 million dollars in benefits were paid out by the National Insurance Department during the year 2021.
However, the quantity of unemployment claims payouts saw a 330 per cent reduction when compared to the year 2020.
The update was provided by the acting Minister of Labour, Social Security and the Third Sector, Senator Dr Shantal Munro-Knight.
Senator Dr Munro-Knight was delivering remarks during a service at the People’s Cathedral to mark National Insurance Scheme’s 55th anniversary.
She also revealed that fewer than 20 per cent of people who are classified as self-employed contribute to the National Insurance Fund.
Senator Dr Munro-Knight used the occasion to encourage self-employed people to pay their contributions to the fund.
