Small craft advisory in effect

December 12, 2023

A small craft advisory is in effect for Barbados as a low-pressure system generates northerly swells in the central northern Atlantic.

As a result, seas are anticipated to be moderate in open water with northerly swells of 2.5 to 3.0 metres (5 to 8 feet), mostly around the northern and northeastern coastlines.

The height of the swells is expected to peak on Thursday, December 14, 2023.

This alert is issued when sea swells of 2.5 to 3.0 metres (8 to 10 feet) are forecast to affect the marine area within the next 36 hours.

The low-pressure system will be affecting the region from December 13-15.

Small craft operators and beachgoers should note the following possibilities mainly along the northern and northeastern coastlines:

  • Operation of smaller vessels can be difficult at times due to large swells.
  • Expect frequent overtopping of waves onto property and roads in very close proximity to the shoreline.
  • Some beach erosion is inevitable with most or all beaches submerged completely.
  • Possible loss of life or injury.

This alert message is valid from 6:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 13, 2023 and will be terminated at 6:00 a.m. Friday, December 15, 2023 or sooner if conditions warrant.
