A biosecurity expert is recommending that measures be stepped up in Barbados and the region against avian influenza or bird flu.
A Cuban zoo had recently reported an avian influenza outbreak at a public park and identified the H5N1 subtype.
Director of the Centre for Biosecurity Studies at the University of the West Indies at Cave Hill, Dr. Kirk Douglas says extreme caution is required as he encouraged a strengthening of biosecurity measures on farms.
He says the entry of bird flu in the region is a definite risk.
Dr. Douglas says the Centre for Biosecurity Studies wants to be a part of the solution and will be hosting a webinar at the end of February with a number of the world’s leading bird flu experts.
