Taking advantage of the elderly in this country will not be tolerated.

That’s the word from Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs Kirk Humphrey.

He was delivering the feature address at the opening of the BARP Towards 2050 Conference, under the theme “Securing My Future, Protecting My Legacy”

Minister Humphrey disclosed that drafting instructions have already been completed and legislative framework is soon to be before Cabinet as the Government looks at more ways to protect senior citizens.

He also gave a stern warning to caregivers.

President of the Barbados Association of Retired Persons (BARP) Marilyn Rice-Bowen says with the rapidly aging population, BARP is also focusing on financially preparing people for their senior years.

Quoting from a Central Bank of Barbados report completed in 2021, she stated that 66 per cent of those surveyed did not know how much was needed to save towards retirement.
