A study has been launched to determine the quantity of greenhouse gases being produced by local wildfires.
It is a joint effort of the University of the West Indies Centre for Biosecurity Studies and the Barbados Fire Service.
To facilitate the collection of data for the 18 month study, the University has presented the Fire Service with four drones.
Director of the Centre for Biosecurity Studies, Dr. Kirk Douglas says while data is currently collected on the number and timing of fires, officers will use the drones to take photos to determine their size.
The project is being funded by the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF).
Dr. Douglas notes the data will also be an effective tool in deciding the country’s nationally determined contributions, which are efforts to reduce national emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change.
Chief Fire Officer, Errol Maynard, says while it will require some changes on their part, it will ultimately result in improved data that can lead to better decision-making.
