Upsurge in gastro and respiratory cases

April 13, 2024

Health officials are reporting an upsurge in gastroenteritis and respiratory cases.

The increase has been recorded over the past two weeks in people five years and older.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness in a statement says this may be due to more individuals eating food which is prepared outside of the home.

However, cases in children under five years old have not surpassed the threshold of the expected number during this time period.

The increase in respiratory cases meanwhile has been recorded in people five years and older up to April 6 this year.

Health officials however say levels in children under five years old continue to be low from the beginning of the year.

Influenza and other cough and cold viruses, though not confirmed, may be contributing to the increase.

It has been further stated that COVID-19 infections remain very low, with no deaths recorded within the last month.

Meanwhile, the Ministry is reporting the current dengue outbreak peaked in January this year, and continued to decline in March.

Although lower than February, numbers are however still above the outbreak threshold for March.
