Urgent need to finance global public goods

October 15, 2023

Barbados wants action taken to avoid a situation where countries of the global south become victims of another pandemic.

Prime Minister, Mia Amor Mottley is pressing for more effective financing mechanisms to be developed to assist countries in this region, in boosting their public health systems, as well as creating robust and responsive domestic infrastructure. She says an aligned community and international response are required to the complex layered challenges as the world’s poorest are affected.

Ms. Mottley’s comments came in a virtual address at the ongoing World Health Summit. The Global Health Network Conference being held in Germany, brings together stakeholders from politics, science, the private sector, and civil society to set the agenda for a healthier future

The event taking place in Berlin, Germany and online from October 15 to 17, is being held under the theme “A Defining Year for Global Health Action”. Ms. Mottley sees the summit as timely given the mounting crises facing the world.

Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, says the ongoing conflict in the Middle East with Israel attacking Hamas in Palestine is a constant reminder of how the health of millions could be put at risk.
