The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) wants Barbados and the Caribbean to forge a path towards becoming true leaders globally in sustainable fisheries development.
Sub-Regional Coordinator for the Caribbean with the FAO, Dr. Renata Clarke advised while leaders have called for transformation of the sector, there are no shortcuts to effective governance and sustainable management of natural marine resources.
Dr. Clarke’s comments came during a Scientific Conference hosted by the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM).
Meanwhile, Executive Director of the CRFM, Milton Haughton believes the role of science in the fisheries sector cannot be downplayed.
He says it provides the foundation for understanding the complex and dynamic interactions in the ecosystem.
