Caribbean leaders, at the conclusion of a two-day symposium on crime, have declared a war on guns in a bid to combat the illegal trade.
In a communique, CARICOM says the weapons are contributing significantly to crime and violence in the region, causing death, disabilities and compromising the safety of Caribbean nationals.
The 15 member bloc further called on the United States of America to join the Caribbean in its war on guns and urgently take action to stop the illegal exportation of firearms and ammunition to the region.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley at the close of the symposium in Port of Spain announced a letter will be sent to the US government, outlining concerns and calling for action to stem the flow of illegal guns.
It was further revealed by Dr. Rowley that an agreement was reached between leaders of CARICOM to ban the use and presence of assault weapons within the civilian population.
