The Barbados Meteorological Services has issued a Flash Flood Watch as a trough system is affecting the island.
A Flash Flood Watch is issued when heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time (generally less than 6 hours) could result in flash flooding within the watch area.
However, this does not mean that flooding will occur, but it is possible.
Heavy intense showers are expected throughout the day with maximum rainfall accumulations of 15.0 to 40.0 mm.
BMS says this activity could generate flooding across low-lying areas of Barbados.
These conditions are expected to peak during the morning with some improvement into this evening.
Possible Impacts:-
- There is a medium/high possibility of significant/severe flooding which will/may result in:
Soil erosion on bared or scarred land surfaces. - Water settlements on roads and fields which may lead to commuting delays and possible isolated diversions.
- Increases in water levels of existing water bodies (e.g. ponds etc.).
- Marginally invasive excess water on roads, fields, storm drains/water canals and on property.
The public is encouraged to monitor official sources for more information.
This Flood/Flash Flood Watch or Warning was issued today at 9:50 a.m. and will be updated/terminated at midday today or sooner if conditions warrant.
