Small Craft Warning downgraded to Advisory

January 26, 2024

The Small Craft Warning in effect for Barbados has been downgraded to an Advisory.

A Small Craft Advisory is issued when sustained winds of 20 to 25 knots and/or sea swells of 2.5 to 3.0 metres (8 to 10 feet) and/or reduced visibility (less than 10 km but greater than 5 km) are affecting or forecast to affect the marine area within the next 36 hours.

The Barbados Meteorological Services says the Atlantic high-pressure system generated strong winds across the region resulting in elevated swell heights mainly along the northern and eastern coasts. A decrease in wind speeds today will result in a marginal improvement in sea conditions with swell heights peaking near 3.0 m today and tomorrow. Therefore the Small Craft Warning has been downgraded to a Small Craft Advisory.

The BMS warns that large open water swells can be hazardous to some vessels, and the operation of smaller vessels can be difficult at times due to large swells.

This alert will be terminated at 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 28, 2024 or sooner if conditions warrant.
