Tropical Storm Lee ‘close to hurricane strength’

September 6, 2023

Tropical Depression #13 was upgraded to Tropical Storm Lee yesterday afternoon.

It its latest release the Barbados Meteorological Services says Lee is now close to hurricane strength, but assures the public that there are no watches or warnings associated with this system for Barbados.

It continues to monitor this system, which is currently located near 14.1N 45.5W and moving westnorthwestward at 14 mph.

The minimum central pressure of Lee is 994 mb with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph.

The system became better organised over the last 24 hours, and is expected to rapidly intensify into a major hurricane later this week.

Model guidance has been consistent in tracking the system well north of Barbados Friday into Saturday, and the BMS says the island will not be directly impacted.

As Tropical Storm Lee moves northwestward, wind speeds here are forecast to decrease and result in very hot and uncomfortable conditions Thursday night into Friday across the island.

The public is encouraged to monitor for updates regardless of current projections as they can change.

The next update will be at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow.
