Tropical wave getting better organised

June 18, 2023

A tropical wave located in the eastern Atlantic is slowly getting better organised and could develop into a tropical depression within the next 24 to 48 hours as it continues to track in a generally westward direction around 15 to 20 mph.

This was revealed in the latest statement from the Barbados Meteorological Services.

They note that while dry mid-level air continues to inhibit the development of the system, conditions are expected to continue improving for further development from early this week. There is some considerable spread in model guidance on the forecast track with some of the guidance bringing the system through the Northern Windwards/Southern Windwards later this week.

In response to this, the forecast track cone has been shifted slightly farther south than our previous statement. There are still no watches or warnings in effect for Barbados however.

Due to the location within the eastern Atlantic, the public is urged to continue monitoring the updates from the BMS along with postings by GIS and DEM. The next update will be at 5:00 a.m. tomorrow, Monday, June 19 or sooner if the system is upgraded to a tropical depression.
