Local cricket legend honoured

Dignitaries, led by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, joined former West Indies and Barbados players this afternoon for the unveiling of the statute to honour fast bowling legend Sir Charles Griffith.

The 85-year-old has been immortalised in the form of a statue at Kensington Oval.

He joins former teammates – National Hero the Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers, and Sir Wesley Hall, outside the gates to the region’s mecca.

Sir Charles’ statue was a three-year process, and a product of Sculptor Jason Hope, the same person who crafted the statues of Sir Frank Walcott and Sir Wes Hall.

In her remarks, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley defended Government’s investment in Kensington Oval, which is the third most iconic cricket venue in the world.

The man of the moment, Sir Charles, said the Barbados Cricket League, where he first started his career, played a pivotal role in the development of the sport on the island.
