Windies qualify for Super 8s

June 13, 2024

Sherfane Rutherford’s knock of an unbeaten half century, followed by a four-wicket haul from Alzarri Joseph helped West Indies beat New Zealand by 13 runs in their Group ‘C’ match of the T20 World Cup last night.

Player of the Match Rutherford played a fiery knock of 68 off 39 balls that propelled the Windies to 149 for nine.

New Zealand lost wickets in quick succession and were restricted to 136 for nine.

Joseph took 4 for 19 while Gudakesh Motie had 3 for 25.

With three wins in a row, the Windies have qualified for the Super 8s stage while New Zealand are all but out from the race.

If Afghanistan defeats PNG tonight, they’ll join the Windies as the two teams from Group ‘C’ to advance to the playoffs.

That game is set for 8:30, live on MCTV’s ESPN channel 308.

Meanwhile, England remain in contention to advance out of Group ‘B’, after today’s devastation of Oman in Antigua.

Oman were dismissed for 47 in 13.2 overs, with Player of the Match Adil Rashid taking 4 for 11 and Jofra Archer 3 for 12.

England replied with 50 for 2 off 3.1 overs to get the victory and moved to third place, while significantly improving their net run rate.

England will qualify for the Super 8s if they beat Namibia on Saturday, and Scotland lose to Australia later that same day.

Sri Lanka have been eliminated from the T20 World Cup Super 8 stage after Bangladesh beat Netherlands by 25 runs in St. Vincent today.

Bangladesh’s win over Netherlands saw them reach four points from three matches in Group ‘D’.

South Africa have already advanced from the same group while Sri Lanka, on one point after three games, can at best reach three points.

Bangladesh were boosted by Shakib Al Hasan’s unbeaten 64 to set a 160-run target for Netherlands, when they posted 159 for five.

In reply, the Dutch managed 134 for eight in 20 overs.
