Government is making moves to acquire a tyre shredder in a bid to address the mountains of tyres at the Mangrove Pond Landfill.
Between to 6000-9000 tyres are sent to the dump each month.
Noting they have been fire hazards over time, Environment Minister Adrian Forde says the machinery will complement his Ministry’s recycling efforts.
He made the announcement as the Clean and Green Programme stopped at Bank Hall, St Michael.
Apart from reducing the size of the heap, Technical Officer with the Sanitation Service Authority Askari Elson says the move will eliminate breeding grounds for rodents and mosquitoes.
He also listed some of the uses for shredded tyres.
