Call for overhaul of Public Service Act

The Chief Justice of Barbados wants an overhaul of the Public Service Act.

Sir Patterson Cheltenham is of the view that in its present form, it is hindering the promotion of excellence, innovation and leadership among civil servants.

Sir Patterson made his thoughts known during a Public Service Human Resource Management Conference at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.

In his feature address, he expressed his disgust at the promotion protocol in the public service, which is based on mainly on length of tenure, instead of performance.

The Chief Justice also went as far as to rubbish the notion of supersession.

Sir Patterson gave an example of the problems he’s seen in the Public Service.

In this instance, he spoke about reviewing a priority list of civil servants up for promotion.
