Canada maintains commitment to Barbados and the Caribbean

January 30, 2023

Barbados and the Caribbean have been reassured of Canada’s commitment to regional security.

In the face of threats, including crime, human and drug trafficking, as well as cyber security, High Commissioner to Barbados, Lilian Chatterjee, says the responsibilities of security forces to meet these challenges and keep citizens safe are growing and evolving.

She says peace and security in the Caribbean impact peace and security in Canada and vice versa.

Ambassador Chatterjee was at the time addressing the close of a two-week training exercise by the Canadian Army Exercise Planning and Execution Course (CAEPEC), at the Regional Security System (RSS) headquarters in Barbados.

Dozens of security officials from Barbados and the region benefited from the exercise planning and execution course.

They were drawn up from RSS, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) and regional police forces.

The training which comes ahead of the Exercise Tradewinds, builds upon a Canadian-led training for members of the Barbados Defence Force, the RSS, the Barbados Police Service and the Barbados Fire Service, held in march 2020.

Deputy Director of the RSS, Graham Archer, expressed thanks to its partners, noting the training at this time is essential.
