January 4th, 2022

The atmosphere after a meeting between the Arawak Cement Company management, government officials and a representative of residents in the area is one of optimism.

The discussions were held at the company’s plant in St. Lucy, one day after Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley met with officials.

Representative for the residents, Melanie James, told CBC News she was grateful for communication between residents and the company becoming more open as they strive to solve the environmental issues in as little time as possible.

Minister in the Ministry of Housing, Lands and Maintenance, Peter Phillips sees the meeting as a first step to resolving the issues and further says it is important for all to coexist in the community.

Attorney General Dale Marshall, was among those present at this meeting and he expressed confidence in Government’s ability to resolve the longstanding issues of the residents.

He says continuous monitoring will be conducted in addition to an independent study in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization.
