Target to be revisited

July 8th, 2021

Barbados will be revisiting its target of being fossil fuel free by 2030, in the next four years.

This announcement from Prime Minister, Mia Amor Mottley, during a joint press conference with Alok Sharma, the President-Designate of the 2021 United Nations Climate Change conference, also referred to as COP26.

Prime Minister Mottley says there’s no doubt the various exogenous shocks have left the country more beleagured economically and financially than we would have liked, but insists that does not mean we are going to allow that to keep us down.

As such, the Prime Minister has announced a new slate of National Determined Contributions, which are efforts to reduce national emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change.

She says Barbados will also make an unconditional commitment to a 20% reduction relative to business as usual emissions by 2025 and 35% by 2030, without international support.

With international support the targets are a 35% reduction by 2025 and 70% by 2030.
