GIAB: Reimbursing NIS “no problem”

March 23, 2023

Local general insurers say they have no problem reimbursing the National Insurance Scheme for benefits paid out in personal injury cases.

Yesterday, Government Senator, Gregory Nicholls suggested it should be mandatory that Loss of Wages benefits be returned to the NIS, when an individual receives an insurance payout relating to the same matter.

President of the General Insurance Association of Barbados, Randy Graham, says the Association has no difficulty with the suggestion.

He said insurers will just need to be kept in the loop when NIS makes a payment to injured parties.

Senator Nicholls also suggested that insurance companies should be required to notify NIS when a personal injury claim comes in, so that appropriate steps can be taken for benefits to be recovered by the state.

Mr. Graham contends this could become an issue with respect to confidentiality and data protection.
