Let’s have some fun today!
As Barbados celebrates 55 years of Independence and becoming a Parliamentary Republic, we are looking at something that is undoubtedly Bajan.
Conkies!
A word that stirs up so much passion and even outrage among some Barbadians, as people debate whether raisins should be included or if to eat conkies at all.
In fact, this very topic caused some heated debate among staff at the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation, as people enthusiastically argued over the contents of this Bajan delicacy and who should have their citizenship revoked.
While some staff members love their conkies with RAISINS AND CHERRIES, others found this combination to be repulsive. In fact, some people thought conkies should be removed from the national menu altogether.
Here is a sample of the rich debate it caused at CBC in some of these quotes below:
Lisa Brome replied to the person who likes theirs with raisins and cherries with: “Conkies no raisins, cherries… prunes, dates … any of those nasty things. And you can quote me on that!”
Someone else was adamant that: “When it comes to conkies – no raisins, no cherries and most importantly no conkies. I never could stand the things and yes I’m 100% Bajan. But if ever I were to ingest one (and that still ain’t happening) it would be no cherries and no raisins.”
Mark Seale took it a bit further: “No conkies at all. Ban them in fact. Ban the ingredients too to make sure.” While someone agreeing with him called them “cornmeal atrocities”.
In the end, raisins won this battle, but it’s clear the conkies war is far from over, so now we turn it over to you…
