Hurricane Tammy moving away from Caribbean

CMC- The Miami-based National Hurricane Center in its 5pm bulletin on Sunday, October 22, said Hurricane Tammy is moving away from the Caribbean islands but has warned that swells generated by Tammy will continue to affect portions of the Lesser Antilles during the next few days.

Late Friday into Saturday, the Category one Hurricane Tammy was bearing down on the islands of the Lesser Antilles and Antigua and Barbuda were placed under Hurricane Warning.

However the system made a slight northward shift on Saturday and the island of Antigua was spared the worse.

Barbuda however received most of the heavy winds and rain, which led to fallen trees, flooded roads and damage to a communication transmission tower, but authorities are awaiting detailed reports from Barbuda to assess the extent of the impact.

During the day on Sunday, both Antigua and Barbuda were under flash flood warnings as large bands of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms associated with Tammy are currently located to the south of the storm

Tammy is said to be moving toward the northwest near 9 mph (15 km/h) and a turn toward the north is expected late tonight, followed by a north-northeast or northeast motion on Monday and Tuesday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 85 mph (140 km/h) with higher gusts.  Some slight trengthening is possible during the next few days.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles (185 km).

Tammy is expected to produce approximately 4 to 8 inches of rain across the the Leeward Islands, with storm total maximum amounts of 12 inches.

These rains may produce isolated flash and urban flooding, along with isolated mudslides in areas of higher terrain.
