Easier ride for seniors

October 23, 2023

The Barbados Association of Retired Persons (BARP) has been explaining to some of its members how recent amendments to the road traffic laws will impact them.

Elderly people who turn 70 are no longer required to show a medical certificate annually to renew their driver’s license. President of BARP, Marilyn Rice-Bowen, spoke about the adjustments at the organisation’s 28th Anniversary Church Service.

The Government made the decision to amend the laws after discussions with the Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners and the Ministry of Transport and Works.

Ms. Rice-Bowen also noted that based on research, by 2050 half of the Barbadian population will be over age 65. With that in mind, she says BARP has been working closely with government and non-governmental organisations to ensure elderly people are comfortable.
