Jamaica: Decline in murders so far

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Jamaica has recorded nearly 20 per cent decline in murders for the first 27 days of this year as compared with last year, according to figures released by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).

It said that the island recorded 65 killings as against 81 for the corresponding period last year.

The JCF said that St. James with 12 murders as compared with nine last year, St. Ann with eight murders as against four last year, St. Catherine North with seven murders, one more than the previous year, were the parishes recording increases in murders so far this year.

St. Andrew Central had five murders as compared to none last year.

The JCF figures show an increase in shootings, injured persons, and robbery reports, with figures showing there were 76 shootings as against 64 last year, with robberies at 50.

There is a decline in rapes with 21 being recorded as compared to 40 last year.

In 2023, Jamaica recorded 1 393 murders last year.
