More earthquakes impact Barbados, region

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – The Caribbean continued to be rattled by earthquakes in recent days with the latest occurring on Wednesday with a 4.4 magnitude tremor affecting at least three islands in the region.

The Seismic Research Centre (SRC) of the University of the West Indies (UWI), said that the quake occurred at 7.18 am (local time) at  a depth of 10 kilometers (km).

It was felt 14 km west of in Bridgetown in Barbados, 165 km east of Kingstown in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and 172 km south east of Castries, the St. Lucian capital.

The SRC said that there were no immediate reports of injuries and damages.

Wednesday’s quake, followed the tremor with a magnitude of 3.6 on Tuesday that was felt 117 km east south east of Point-à-Pitre, in the French island of Guadeloupe,  135 km easte south east of St. John’s Antigua and 172 km east south east of Brades in the British Overseas Territory of Montserrat.

Over the last weekend, several earthquakes were reported in the Caribbean with the strongest  having  a magnitude of 6.0  recorded northeast of Guadeloupe .

“Please note that our region is a seismically active one and we can feel events in a short period of time. This is why we always urge persons to plan, prepare and practice for any earthquake event,” the SRC said in a statement, acknowledging that the earthquakes have worried people in the Caribbean.
