T&T: Murder suspect killed seconds after leaving police station

November 14, 2023

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Police Commissioner Erla Harewood-Christopher Tuesday vowed to deal with the “desperate brazen attacks by criminal elements” after a 28-year-old murder suspect was shot and killed a few minutes after being released from a  police station on the outskirts of the capital.

Harewood-Christopher said that Kevon Moore had been detained by law enforcement authorities on November 10 as they probed an earlier murder.

But she said on Monday evening while the police were continuing their investigations into the murder in which Moore was a suspect, “the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) was served with a pre-action protocol letter by attorneys representing Mr. Moore.

“Soon after exiting the (police) station several loud explosions were heard and on checking officers found Mr. Moore lying along the roadway suffering from apparent gun shot wounds. A vehicle was seen speeding away from the scene,” she said.

The Police Commissioner said Moore was brought to the Port of Spain General Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

“The motive for the killing is presumed to be gang related. This is another unfortunate example of the desperate brazen attacks by the criminal elements in our country.  The police view such conduct as wholly unacceptable and vow to continue to confront and apprehend criminal elements wherever we find them in the interest of ensuring the safety and security of every citizen,” Harewood-Christopher said.

Last year, Trinidad and Tobago recorded 602 murders and so far this year, the figure is just over 500.
