Head of the Commonwealth, Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II has passed away.
In a statement, Buckingham Palace announced the Queen died peacefully this afternoon at Balmoral Castle.
The 96 year old Queen, the UK’s longest-serving monarch, reigned for 70 years after coming to the throne in 1952.
Earlier today, the Palace had announced that she was under medical supervision, as doctors were concerned for her health.
Family members had travelled to Balmoral, her Scottish Estate, after being informed of the doctors’ concerns.
With her death, eldest son Charles, the former Prince of Wales, will lead the country in mourning as the new King and head of state for 14 Commonwealth realms.
The King and the Queen Consort are expected to remain at Balmoral this evening and return to London tomorrow.
Meanwhile, crowds gathered outside Buckingham Palace in London began crying on news of her death, and the Union flag on top of the Palace was lowered to half-mast.
