St. Vincent & the Grenadines Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves says he has written to Russian President Vladimir Putin, but has declined at this stage to disclose the contents of the correspondence.
Speaking during a radio interview from Qatar, where he is on official business, Dr. Gonsalves said “I am pretty sure that he probably would have received it by now. I just want to indicate that. And we are doing work, diplomatic work, otherwise. I was just in touch with our Ambassador to the United Nations”.
The Prime Minister also revealed there are 7 or 8 Vincentian students in Russia and the Chief Personnel Officer (CPO) has been in touch with with them amid Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
He confirmed the students are doing OK.
When asked if he planned to make a statement on the conflict when he returns to St. Vincent this weekend, Gonsalves noted that CARICOM has already issued a statement.
Prime Minister Gonsalves also touched on the implications of the conflict on commodity prices, including wheat products and energy.
He noted with Russia and Ukraine producing close to half of the world’s wheat, the price of flour would increase.
