1ST Africa-CARICOM summit held

September 7th, 2021

Prime Minister, Mia Amor Mottley has issued an impassioned plea for the Caribbean and Africa to work together.

This would allow them, as she described it, to cut out the middle passage and come together to benefit the more than a billion people who live in the two regions.

The Prime Minister was addressing the historic Africa-Caribbean Summit, the first to be held. The theme of the one day virtual summit is “Unity Across Continents and Oceans: Opportunities for Deepening Integration”.

Prime Minister Mottley has identified a number of initiatives which she believes can help the two regions become a more powerful voice in the international community.

She says together they can advocate on issues like the climate crisis, financial discrimination and now the COVID-19 pandemic.

For the Prime Minister, this movement should begin with a weekly direct airline flight between Africa and CARICOM.

She also thinks the CARICOM/Africa alliance should have a coordinated presence and voice at the high level United Nations General Assembly later this month.

That meeting will celebrate the 20 year old Durban Agreement which recognized the time had come for talks on reparations.
