September 21, 2023

Barbados has advised countries to continue their public education campaigns against non-communicable diseases, as the world is fighting against a pop culture that reinforces instant food and snacks.

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley shared the advice at the second annual Gathering of the Global Group of Heads of State and Government for the Prevention and Control of NCDs in New York.

The meeting at the UN seeks to further build momentum and engage global leaders to take ownership of the NCDs Agenda on the Road to the 4th High-Level Meeting on Non-Communicable Diseases in 2025.

Ms. Mottley, Co-Chair of the Sustainable Development Goals Advisory Group says countries have been impacted by the poly-crisis with health budgets taking a blow.

She says a key mission for Barbados is keeping its citizens healthy and ensuring they have access to water and nutritious foods.

Director General of the World Health Organisation Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, says millions are dying prematurely every year as a result of NCDs.

He also highlighted obesity and hypertension are rising every year around the world. Dr. Ghebreyesus says there are effective tools to prevent and treat NCDs.
