President of the Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners Dr. Lynda Williams is urging Barbadians to be on the alert during this festive season, as the potential threat of a number of respiratory ailments is ongoing, including a sub-variant of COVID-19.
She made the comment against the background of reports of an increase in whooping cough in the United Kingdom, along with reports of flu-like symptoms out of China.
Dr. Williams says this is not an unprecedented surge, but is actually a return to the pre-COVID situation.
She says a decline in childhood vaccine uptake in some countries has also been a factor, leading to an increase in cases of whooping cough in places like the UK.
