This was revealed this evening by Chairman of the Cabinet Sub-committee in charge of November 30 celebrations, Minister of Home Affairs and Information, Wilfred Abrahams.

At a media conference this afternoon at Ilaro Court, Two Mile Hill, St. Michael, Minister Abrahams said that for the first time in two years due to Covid, there will be a full celebration of any and all things Barbadian for the island’s 56th anniversary of Independence and first anniversary as a Republic.

Other Sub-committee members are Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs, Kirk Humphrey; Minister of Youth Sport and Community Empowerment, Charles Griffith; Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office with responsibility for Culture, Senator Dr. Shantal Munro- Knight; Senator John King; Chief Executive Officer of the National Cultural Foundation, Carol Roberts-Reifer; and Chief of Staff of the Barbados Defence Force, Commodore Errington Shurland, Minister Abrahams said.

He added, “Others will be co-opted to the committee as the need arises.”

November 30 was celebrated as Independence Day since Barbados gained independence from Great Britain in 1966.

Barbados became a Republic in November 2021, breaking ties with Britain by installing its first Head of State, in President Her Excellency The Most Honourable Dame Sandra Mason.
