Barbados under a flash-flood watch

August 23, 2021

Barbados remains under a flash-flood watch.

That was the message from the Barbados Meteorological Services this morning, as their “Excess Rainfall” alert level changed from yellow to orange.

The notice added that, “maximum rainfall accumulations of 1 to 2 inches are possible later this morning as unsettled conditions linger across Barbados.  This watch may be upgraded to a warning at short notice if conditions warrant.”

Residents and visitors should note that the following impacts may occur during this forecast period:-

– Significant runoff from higher elevations.

– Significant soil erosion is likely on exposed or scarred land surfaces.

– Large water settlements on roads and fields.

– Significant adjustments to water levels of existing water bodies (ponds etc.).

– Significant delays on traffic routes with some roads possibly impassable.

– Large objects or debris from higher elevations may also become embedded within fast-moving water flows.

– Significant flooding at the foot of hillsides and coastal roads is possible.

The alert message will be updated at 12 pm today or sooner if conditions warrant.
