BSP upbeat over success rate

August 26, 2023

The heightened breast cancer awareness drive in Barbados is being touted as being responsible for the increasing percentage of people now getting tested.

This from Medical Coordinator for the Barbados Cancer Society Breast Screening Programme Dr. Shirley Jhagroo.

She says over the last 20 years breast cancer awareness has mobilised people around the community to get involved.

This she says, has resulted in an average of 700 patients attending the clinic monthly for mammograms and another 100 for ultrasounds.

Dr. Jhagroo says encouraging evidence in March of this year revealed that all the breast cancer patients diagnosed five years previously with stages 1 and 2 were still alive.

She made the comment today during the launch of the FirstCaribbean International Bank-Barbados Cancer Society’s Walk For the Cure 2023 at the Sugar Bay Hotel.

The patron for this year’s event is Dame Billie Miller.

Dr. Jhagroo says the Cancer Society would love to see the capacity for the storage of mammograms in Barbados improved over the next three years.
