BWU cautiously optimistic about wage negotiations agreement

March 8, 2023

The Barbados Workers’ Union says it’s cautiously pleased with yesterday’s wage negotiations agreement for public sector workers.

Government and unions have consented to a one-off tax free payment of $1500 for everyone who at March 31 this year would have been working in the public service or state owned enterprises that are dependent on central Government for recurring financial support.

The same workers are eligible for cumulative salary increases of three percent for 2023 to 2024 and three percent in 2024 to 2025.

There will also be increases in allowances of 10 percent for 2022 to 2023 and three percent for each of the two following years.

General Secretary of the BWU, Toni Moore, says during the robust discussions, several proposals were put forward by the representative unions, including the BWU which she notes stood firm in what it was asking for.

Ms. Moore believes this was significant in ensuring the highest outcome possible.

She says the Union has also raised a number of grievances on behalf of public servants, which she expects will be addressed soon.
