Call for permanent membership

Calls for an urgent transformation of the global development financial architecture for Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

This appeal is from Barbados’ representative to the Parliamentary Assemblies of the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States and the European Union (OACPS/EU), Edmund Hinkson.

He notes that many developing countries, including small island developing states such as those in the caribbean, are invariably burdened by debt repayment obligations to international development funding institutions and to private capital banks.

Mr. Hinkson made the remark at the just concluded 43rd OACPS/EU joint Parliamentary Assembly held in Brussels.

According to Mr. Hinkson, many nations in the African, Caribbean and Pacific regions are in a debt trap which has been compounded by the presence of recent health pandemics such as covid and by horrendous natural disasters such as hurricanes, made worst by global climatic changes.
