With the Senate being the focus of the latest Parliamentary Reform Commission’s town hall meeting, a proposal from the 1998 report of the Sir Henry Forde-led Constitution Review Commission has won favour with Chairman, Sir Richard Cheltenham.
The proposal then called for six Senators to be appointed by the President if there’s no leader of the Opposition.
It recommended consultations be held with political parties that were supported by at least 10 percent of voters.
Sir Richard, a former President of the Senate however has some concerns.
The remuneration of Parliamentarians and Senators was brought to the fore by Commission member and Deputy President of the Senate, Her Honour Senator Elizabeth Thompson after a participant questioned the role of a Chaplain in Parliament.
