Children to benefit from Caribbean dictionary

July 30, 2023

School-aged children between 11 and 18 now have a dictionary geared toward their understanding of Barbadian and Caribbean heritage.

The recently launched “Dictionary Of Caribbean English Usage, The School Edition,” was done by linguist Dr. Jeannette Allsopp but its foundation is the original dictionary by that name by her late husband, Professor Richard Allsopp. Launched at the University of the West Indies, the new work is divided into themes for children with images from Caribbean photographers.

Dr. Allsopp believes that if you do not know who you are you cannot function and that is why a school edition is necessary. She highlighted a CBC programme which she says is similarly helping with identity.

Minister in the Ministry of Culture, Senator Dr. Shantal Munro-Knight, who was presented with a copy of the book, says texts like these are important.
