Debate on amendments to the Barbados Constitution has begun in the Lower House.
The focus among other things has been on the appointment of Opposition Senators where there is no Opposition Leader.
Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley says today’s session is aimed at strengthening democracy.
During her contribution to the Constitution Amendment Bill, the Prime Minister noted that while her Government captured all 30 seats, it is not all-powerful.
She believes that given the Democratic Labour Party’s record and contributions to Barbados, it should have a voice.
Ms Mottley has also addressed the other proposed amendment to the constitution which deals with lowering the age of eligibility to serve in the Senate and Lower House.
According to her, anomalies exist where Barbadians can vote at the age of 18, yet are unable to serve in the House of Parliament.
She reminisced on her younger years having first run for office, serving in the Senate and being appointed as Minister of Education and stresses her government is correcting a wrong.
