Draft of new Constitution by year end

Barbados should have a draft of its new Constitution by the end of the year.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kerrie Symmonds says the document will be presented to the Cabinet and later subjected to further public consultation and refinement before being legislated and enacted.

The update was provided as the country’s human rights record was examined during the 43rd Universal Periodic Review for Barbados at the Human Rights Council.

He told the forum immediately on becoming a republic, Barbados commenced the process of constitutional reform.

During the Universal Periodic Review session, it was revealed by Minister Symmonds that despite challenges, Barbados has fully implemented 43 of the 64 supported recommendations from the last cycle, and another 16 were partially implemented.

He reiterated Barbados remains committed to ensuring human rights and is redoubling its efforts to live up to the high standards.

The strides made by the island regarding the advancement of women in various spheres were highlighted, along with supporting legislation introduced to protect children.

On the latter, he told those present the long anticipated Child Protection Bill allows for the fulsome protection of children and when enacted, will bridge several policy gaps.
