The Ministry of Education is moving to address concerns about literacy and numeracy deficits in primary schools.
Minister Kay McConney has announced they’re moving to appoint special teachers to help address the issues from the next school year.
She made the comments at the launch of the National Task Force on Literacy Education at the Erdiston Teachers Training College.
Chief Education Officer Dr. Ramona Archer-Bradshaw says an analysis of national data from 2012 to 2021 has revealed issues with performance in English at the Infants B and Class 2 levels. She says problems have also been identified from 2023 secondary school data.
Dr. Archer-Bradshaw says the National Task Force, chaired by educator Dr. Sylvia Henry, will collaborate with the Ministry to elevate literacy levels in Barbados.
